Invested in 2 startups without looking at their pitch deck. Here is why.
This week I invested in 2 startups. I made the decision to invest in each one of them in less than 2 mins and I did not even look at their pitch deck. Why?
I invest in founders that:
- create products or services that I use and that I understand.
- I worked with, coached or got to know over time.
- know how to sell before or while building their product.
- have a growing user database or paying customers.
- run a company that can be global from day 1.
A few pieces of advice for founders raising money 💸:
- Find investors who have invested in companies like yours, who love your product and understand your industry.
- Build relationships with investors before you need them. Get the investors to know you, your team and follow your progress before asking for money.
- Really get to know the investors too. Maybe you realize that you don’t want to have them as shareholders (some of us are really a pain in the a**).
- Tap into your local network of investors. It is easier to convince local investors to meet you and stay in touch with you.
- Approach experienced investors familiar with startup investments and who have realistic expectations.
- Get paying customers. It is easier to ask for money when you know how to make money and when you have started to make some money.
So basically I knew these startups and I have been following their journey for some years before investing in them. To sum up: build your network, build relationships, show investors that you know how to make money and that you can give them a great return on investment.
